The Banksia PDF Print E-mail

The Banksia, part of the family of proteaoids and a native of Australia, is well suited to the desert conditions of Israel. It is a hardy plant requiring a third of the water that a crop like grapes need.

Its secret is its very complicated proteaoid root system. It has a tap root which can go down many feet to reach the inherent moisture under the ground. It also has very highly developed fiber-like roots which are found just under the surface of the sand and are able to utilize dewfall that occurs in the evenings and early mornings.

Banksias are bush-like plants and can grow to heights of 20 ft or more. The first pick on 3 years of growth i.e. the fourth season. They are plants that have an extremely long shelf life after picking, even to a month or more depending on the conditions. Once they dry out they are also valued in dry flower arrangements.

The bulk of our banksias will be ericafolia with experimentation with menzeiis and pangrinda varieties.

Work in the flowers is an ideal opportunity for those who want to come and volunteer time in the fields. Accommodation for volunteers is a top priority for us at the moment. As soon as it is available, we will put the word out.

Breaking News! Ericafolia seeds have been obtained and we are planting like crazy to establish between 4000 and 5000 seedlings! Pictures will follow soon!

Germination has begun! We are struggling with severe sand storms but our hot house is holding up.
